Matt Riddle Eyes a Potential Return to MMA in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a possible return to mixed martial arts (MMA) by 2024. At 37, Riddle is considering stepping back into the ring or cage, stirring excitement among fans of both MMA and wrestling.
Riddle's combat sports journey has been unconventional and controversial, marked by a departure from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on a high note, only to transition into the world of professional wrestling. Despite this shift, Riddle's passion for MMA appears undiminished as he engages in discussions with various fighting organizations about a potential comeback.
Undisclosed Negotiations
While Riddle has remained tight-lipped about the specifics, he has confirmed ongoing talks with multiple promotions. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle disclosed to MMA Junkie. He added, "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon." The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported potential interest from bare-knuckle fighting circles and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), indicating a wide array of options for Riddle's fighting future.
A Controversial UFC Tenure
Riddle's tenure in the UFC was as promising as it was turbulent. He left the promotion in 2013 on a four-win streak after a victory over Che Mills. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which drew public criticism from UFC President Dana White. Reflecting on White's comments, Riddle sees a silver lining. "I have to thank Dana, because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," he acknowledged.
Despite their past, Riddle harbors no ill feelings towards White or the UFC. "I never say never," Riddle remarked. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." His last MMA fight took place in February 2014 against Michael Kuiper for Titan FC, where he secured another win, reinforcing his capabilities as a formidable fighter.
Transition to Professional Wrestling
After leaving the UFC, Riddle embarked on a new career path in professional wrestling. He began training in 2014 and made his debut the following year. His natural charisma and athletic prowess quickly earned him a reputation on the independent circuit, where he clinched several titles.
In 2018, Riddle's wrestling career reached a new zenith when he joined WWE NXT. There, he captured the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne. His momentum continued as he ascended to WWE's main roster, winning the United States Championship in February 2021. Alongside Randy Orton, Riddle formed the popular tag team "RK-Bro," securing the Raw Tag Team Championship twice.
Staying Fight-Ready
Despite his success in the squared circle, Riddle has maintained his combat readiness, practicing martial arts multiple times each week. As a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, his skill set remains sharp—an asset that could prove invaluable should he re-enter the world of MMA. Riddle's recent appearance at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando suggests that his interest in combat sports extends beyond the wrestling ring.
Riddle's reflections on his career encapsulate his enduring fighting spirit. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he mused. "I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
Currently a free agent, Riddle's future in combat sports is ripe with possibilities. Whether he returns to MMA or continues to entertain in the wrestling arena, his competitive fire and versatility ensure that fans will be eagerly watching his next move.
As the prospect of Riddle's return to MMA looms on the horizon, the question remains: Will we see this multifaceted athlete make a triumphant comeback to the sport where he first made his mark? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—Matt Riddle isn't done fighting yet.
