As the Philadelphia Eagles conclude their final week of training camp at the NovaCare Complex, the atmosphere is charged with increasing intensity and mounting stakes. With just three consecutive practices remaining before the final preseason game, every rep counts. The imminent roster cuts next Tuesday add another layer of pressure as players vie for their spots on the team.
Notable Absences and Returns
Tuesday's practice session, a disciplined 1-hour and 47-minute workout in shells and shorts, saw a number of absences. Missing from the field were OL Matt Hennessy, TE Albert Okwuegbunam, S Caden Sterns, WR John Ross, OL Tyler Steen, and WR Johnny Wilson. However, several players returned, including DT Gabe Hall, TE E.J. Jenkins, WR Joseph Ngata, and DT Moro Ojomo.
Key Practice Highlights
The offensive line saw some shuffling with guard Mekhi Becton taking first-team reps at right guard. Meanwhile, guard Landon Dickerson returned to the practice field without missing any time, despite favoring his knee during Sunday's session. Running back Saquon Barkley, however, sat out the final period of team drills to receive treatment on his lower back. Tight end Dallas Goedert participated only in the individual period before sitting out the team portion.
At wide receiver, Ainias Smith had an impressive showing, besting both safety Avonte Maddox and cornerback Eli Ricks on consecutive reps. Cornerback Quinyon Mitchell also made a strong impact by forcing an incompletion against DeVonta Smith and disrupting a sweep to Barkley. "That's a route right there," Mitchell was heard saying, underscoring his keen defensive instincts.
Defensive Prowess and QB Performance
Cornerback Cooper DeJean had a mixed bag of performances. He allowed a straightforward completion to Britain Covey and later was beaten by Covey on another play. Defensive back Parry Nickerson nearly picked off Jalen Hurts, courtesy of a miscommunication with A.J. Brown.
Quarterback Tanner McKee had his moments, connecting with Jacob Harris in a 1-on-1 drill against Eli Ricks and delivering a deep pass to E.J. Jenkins. "Good job, E.J.," Head Coach Nick Sirianni praised Jenkins during the session.
Julian Okwara was a force to be reckoned with, forcing Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett to scramble and leading to an incompletion during the 11-on-11s. Okwara continued to apply pressure later in practice, resulting in another throwaway.
Offensive Line Highlights
The standout performer on the offensive line was Fred Johnson, who dominated in both run blocking and pass protection. His ability to manhandle Eli Ricks during a run play did not go unnoticed and highlighted his readiness to secure a crucial role on the team.
As the Eagles approach the final preseason hurdle, the competition remains fierce, the performances critical, and the stakes sky-high. Whether it's the returning players making their mark, key players like Smith and Mitchell showcasing their skill, or the team dealing with absences and injuries, every moment of practice is a step closer to defining the season ahead.
