Patriots Training Camp Day 2: Quarterback Rotations, Offensive Line Shifts, and Injury Updates
Day 2 of the New England Patriots training camp under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo spotlighted significant quarterback developments, strategic adjustments on the offensive line, and notable injury updates.
Quarterback Dynamics
The most significant takeaway from the day was the quarterback rotation, with Jacoby Brissett securing first-team reps. Brissett showcased a strong performance, completing nine of his 13 passes in competitive drills and two of his four attempts in 11-on-11 situations. Following him closely in the pecking order were Drake Maye and Joe Milton III, while Bailey Zappe was notably demoted to the fourth quarterback spot.
Maye impressed, completing 10 of his 12 passes in competitive drills. However, a miscommunication with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton and a drop by tight end Jaheim Bell marred his 11-on-11 performance. Joe Milton III, chosen over Zappe for competitive drills, held his own, completing four of his six passes. Zappe, now the fourth quarterback, managed two completions out of three throws during minicamp work, signaling his struggle to climb back up the depth chart.
Head coach Jerod Mayo commented on the quarterback situation, emphasizing the importance of competition. “We’re always going to take the mindset of we’re going to do what’s best for the organization and we’re going to try to get those guys reps so they can compete,” Mayo stated. Addressing the depth, he added, “I don't know if that means four or three, honestly. Right now we have four quarterbacks and those guys will go out there and practice today.”
Offensive Line Adjustments
The offensive line saw notable rotations, especially at the right tackle position, where Calvin Anderson, Caedan Wallace, and Vederian Lowe vied for supremacy. Mike Onwenu remained steady at right guard, providing a reliable foundation. On Day 1, Anderson and Wallace primarily occupied the right tackle role, but Day 2 introduced more variability. Lowe took significant snaps at right tackle, while Wallace and Anderson contributed on the left side.
Wide Receiver and Tight End Performances
Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton's increased reps and targets during 7-on-7 drills were a highlight, although he experienced a hiccup with Maye in the 11-on-11 performance. Tight end Jaheim Bell faced challenges, including a drop during drills, reflecting the growing pains players often face in early training days.
Kendrick Bourne, recovering from a torn ACL, attended practice but remained sidelined from active drills. His presence, however, signals optimism for his return as he progresses through recovery.
Defensive Highlights
The defensive unit had its standout moments as well. Marcus Jones broke up a pass intended for Ja'Lynn Polk during the first competitive 7-on-7 period, showcasing his readiness. The boundary cornerback positions appear to be solidifying, with Christian Gonzalez projected to secure one spot and Jonathan Jones likely to cover the opposite side.
Injury and Contract Updates
Robert Kraft was observed in discussions with pass rusher Matthew Judon concerning his contract status. Kraft also engaged with Eliot Wolf, the executive vice president of player personnel, in what appeared to be a strategic conversation.
Antonio Gibson made his return to practice but participated in a limited capacity, while DeMario Douglas only engaged in individual drills, abstaining from 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 sessions. Antonio Mafi's day included a misstep with a poor snap to Milton during afternoon drills, a reminder of the precision required at this level.
Overall, the second day of camp reflected the team’s commitment to optimizing performance, fostering competition, and carefully managing player recovery and development. The insight into quarterback rotations and the evolving offensive line strategy will be pivotal as the Patriots continue to build under Mayo's leadership.
