Maxx Crosby: An Unyielding Force in the NFL
Maxx Crosby’s remarkable journey in the NFL has seen resilience, dedication, and continuous improvement, setting him apart as one of the league's elite defensive players. Recently, Crosby co-hosted the "Sack Summit" at UNLV, joining forces with veterans Von Miller and Cameron Jordan. This event brings together defensive linemen to share techniques and strategies, ensuring the evolution of the craft.
"Maxx had been coming here for years, and to see his growth and his development into one of the best pass rushers in the league, he loved my baby like it was his," said Miller. "So, I just thought it was natural just to bring Maxx in… to kind of give [him] a piece of it, just to ensure the life of the [Sack] Summit. I don't know how many years I got left, but Maxx, he's going to play another 10."
Crosby's commitment to the game is unquestionable. Last season, he played through significant injuries to his left knee and thumb, both of which required surgeries in January. Despite the pain, he participated in 95% of Las Vegas Raiders' defensive snaps, showcasing his mental and physical toughness.
"I was damn near limited every single day, the whole season in practice… I had to learn to make an adjustment because I can't just go out there and run my knee into the ground. I had to be ready for Sunday," Crosby reflected. It’s this attitude that has driven Crosby to peak performance levels, evident in his career-high numbers last season with 14.5 sacks and 90 tackles.
Crosby’s achievements earned him several honors, including being named second-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection for the third consecutive year. His influence on the field caught the eyes of many, including Raiders' senior defensive assistant Rob Ryan. "When you talk about Maxx Crosby, you're talking about the best defensive player in the league, probably in the history, that I've ever seen. Now, I've only been around it 30 years, but I mean, he's that good."
Beyond personal accolades, Crosby's dedication to the Raiders is clear. He's one of the only two players still on the roster who played with the team during their Oakland days and has witnessed the Raiders' significant transitions, including the appointment of four coaches since 2019: Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels, and Antonio Pierce. Despite a turbulent period, marked by a 39-44 record and only one playoff appearance, Crosby has remained a cornerstone of the Raiders' defense.
In recognition of his contributions, Crosby received a $6 million raise in the offseason, without extending his current contract. This gesture underscores the team's confidence in his abilities and future impact. Back in March 2022, Crosby signed a four-year extension worth $95 million, with over $53 million guaranteed, solidifying his role as a key player for the franchise.
While Crosby's relentless work ethic is a significant driver of his success, he credits his consistency and holistic approach to training. "You talk about fight camps [lasting] maybe three months, four months; I do it 365 [days]. So that's why I feel like, at the end of the day, my consistency is what separates myself and it will only keep getting me better because I don't leave any stone unturned," he shared.
Crosby’s resilience shone through as he began his recovery program on Jan. 22, following the surgeries. "I had to get two major surgeries, and it's been different, but at the end of the day, there's not one street to get to where you want to go, there's multiple," Crosby affirmed. His determination and adaptability will undoubtedly continue to serve him well as he strives to be the top player in his field.
Joining Crosby in navigating the Raiders' future is Thayer Munford, the new starting right tackle. Coach Antonio Pierce is optimistic about Munford's potential impact, stating, "Hopefully that speeds up the development and growth with [Munford], and makes us a better team."
For Crosby, every offseason is seen as an opportunity to grow stronger and smarter. "It made me take a step back so I could take three steps forward, and I feel like that's what this offseason was all about—my one goal is to be the best in the world, pound for pound, and I talk about it, I'm about it, I live it every single day and whatever street I've got to travel to get to where I want to go, I'm going to do that," he declared.
With Crosby's relentless pursuit of excellence and a keen eye on emerging talent like Munford, the Raiders can hope for a formidable season ahead. The journey of Maxx Crosby is a testament to the power of tenacity, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to greatness.
